FAQs

The answers to all your orthodontic questions!

At Aloha Orthodontics, Dr. Naren Chelian (aka Dr. C) wants more than an excellent smile for his patients. He wants the patient experience to be just as outstanding. His energetic personality vibrates throughout the office from his team to his patients. As soon as you step inside Aloha Orthodontics, you can’t help but smile as staff and patients wear t shirts branded with the slogan: Smile Sucka. When asked about his motto, Dr. C responds: “Because smiling is free, smiling is contagious and smiling makes people happy. So why not?!”

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?

1. A smile that makes you feel beautiful and confident!

2. Increased access to oral hygiene. Crowded teeth make it more difficult to floss and makes it easier for bacteria to hide and damage your teeth and surrounding bone.

3. A healthy occlusion (bite) that helps you function (chew) well.

What are the common conditions that orthodontists treat?

Crowding

Spacing

Deep Overbite

Open Bite

Underbite

What should I expect in the initial consultation?

The initial smile consultation usually involves a series of photos & radiographs (x rays) that Dr. C uses to diagnose your teeth and your jaw. After this, you will be provided with treatment options for your specific case and payment options. This consultation is free for our patients!

What is the age of patients you typically work with?

Dr. C treats children and adults of all ages since you’re never too young or too old to smile!

The ideal age to start visiting an orthodontist is when a patient is 7 years old. The average age that most children start comprehensive orthodontic treatment if they don’t need an early intervention treatment is between 10 years of age and up.

What is Invisalign and do you offer it?

Invisalign is a removable orthodontic device that works similar to braces and offers similar results while still allowing the comfort to eat & clean your teeth like you would normally do without braces. When you come in for your free consultation, we will be happy to go over all the pros & cons of Invisalign treatment with you.

At what age can someone wear Invisalign?

Invisalign is now available for children and adults!

If I am going to college or leaving the city, should I still get orthodontic care?

This is a unique situation. If you are moving, it is ideal to pursue orthodontic treatment where you reside most of the time. Transferring with braces is challenging and usually results in paying additional costs.

I have a retainer. How often should I wear it? How do I clean it?

We will give you specific instructions for your retainer when you come in.

I lost my retainer, what should I do?

Call the office and set an appointment to come in ASAP to prevent teeth shifting!

I lost my retainer case, what should I do?

There are many fun cases that you can purchase online. If you are having difficulty finding one, feel free to call us.

Should I bring my retainer to my general dentist?

Bring your retainers to all of your dental visits.

If there is an option for your dentist to mold your dental fillings to fit your retainers, then it may be possible to continue using your current retainer and avoid having to purchase a new one for additional costs.

It is also a great idea to coordinate your dental visits on a day that your orthodontist is open.

I have an orthodontic emergency, what should I do?

Call us and we will be happy to help. If you are not able to reach us and are having an emergency, reach out to your dentist. If you are an emergency that is medically related, call your physician or consider 911 if it is life threatening.

What areas do you serve?

We serve the entire city of Las Vegas!

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is someone that specializes in braces and Invisalign. To have the best smile possible, it is recommended to pursue your orthodontic treatment (braces or Invisalign) with an orthodontist.

What are the different phases of treatment?

Comprehensive or Phase 2 treatment is what the majority of children & adults have. This is when all of the permanent (adult) teeth are present.

Phase 1 treatment is an early orthodontic treatment option that is offered for children that have primary (baby) & permanent (adult) teeth. This is usually indicated when a child has one of the following conditions:

  1. Functional problem with current teeth positions.
  2. Traumatic relationship that can cause damage to permanent teeth.
  3. Tooth positions causing patient to be severely self conscious.
  4. Option to improve jaw development.
Can adults benefit from orthodontics?

Absolutely! The same benefits that are present for children are available for adults. Dr. C treats a large percentage of adults in addition to children. The benefits include:

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Orthodontic treatment varies with each person. When you come in for your consultation, we will be happy to let you know the time for your specific case.

Do braces hurt?

This varies with each person and depends on their teeth positions.

Will braces interfere with playing sports?

If you have braces, there are many types of mouthguards available online that can be used with braces. If you have difficulty finding one online, call the office and we will be happy to help.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

Let us know what musical instruments you play when you come in and we will be happy to guide you.

Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?

Yes! Continue visiting your general dentist for cleanings as recommended.

What types of foods should I avoid with braces?

There is a list that you will receive when you come in but a rule of thumb is to avoid sticky, chewy, gooey and hard foods. Eating slowly is also advised when you have braces.
